From the author:
There was a time I felt my forever home would be near Joshua Tree National Park. Endless hours spent wandering alone in the Park’s natural, stark beauty brought joy, wonder, and peace. In 2023, after 25 years of desert living, I moved back to the Ocean of my childhood. These writings and photographs reflect a reconnection with Nature in a different time and space.
In this journey, I receive insights from the land, Pacific Ocean, and new ecosystems not previously observed. Desert silence is matched with Ocean roar. Both allow for reflection and solitude. Hiking in the forest is a timeless connection with trees, fresh water, animals and landscape.
I invite you to join me, writing your reflections on the blank pages provided.
Give yourself time to walk or hike, and create your own adventures in the outdoors. See, hear, smell, feel or gently touch what Nature reveals.
Catherine M. Nelson

White blowing mist
dampens air,
leaves clothes dry.
Familiar shoreline
unrecognized,
covered in fog.
Alone,
yet surrounded
by muted voices,
pups and I walk on....
This was truly a delightful, whimsical and inspirational book. You had me at the title. I believe this book should be a must-read for all new teachers K-8.
- Dr. Lynne Kennedy, PhD. Superintendent (Retired)
Future teachers are required to take classes on educational theory, research, and pedagogy, technology, classroom management, and specific curricular areas, but all of these classes cannot truly prepare an individual for what it is actually like to teach…to be in charge of children’s lives and education…to develop relationships that have lasting impacts on students’ lives. No class can teach one to have a sense of humor, to have patience, or to develop lasting, impactful relationships through listening, modeling, and connecting. Cathy Nelson’s Journal, "Miss Nelson, Something’s in my Pants," illustrates the day-to-day interactions with children and the impact one person’s actions or inactions can have on their lives and their future education. The Journal provides a glimpse to readers, educators or not, of what it is actually like to be in a classroom. It demonstrates that being a great teacher is much more than teaching curriculum; it is teaching individuals at their level based upon their specific needs at any given time. Her stories both entertain and exemplify excellent teaching. A must read for future teachers; a great reflection for tenured teachers; and an entertaining glimpse into the world of education for non-educators.
- Vonda Viland, Retired. Alternative education administrator and administrative coach
“Miss Nelson, Something’s in My Pants” is a delightful, inspiring collection of anecdotal stories that explores the experience of teaching elementary students. Catherine Nelson’s journal provides a glimpse of the reality of being in a classroom filled with students with varying abilities. Ms. Nelson’s reflections provide the readers with a look at insights into teaching beyond the “lesson plans”, focusing on each student’s needs on any given day. I believe this book would be a great read for all teachers, new and experienced.

“Miss Nelson, Something’s In My Pants!” A Teacher’s Journal from the Heart of Elementary School and “Miss Nelson, Something’s In My Pants!” A Teacher’s Handbook from the Heart of Elementary School are designed to be read together, each offering a different entry point into the same lived classroom experience. The Journal captures moments, reflections, and stories drawn from daily school life, allowing space for recognition, connection, and pause. It invites readers to see themselves in familiar situations and reflect on the quieter layers of teaching.
The Handbook serves as a practical companion, translating those lived moments into guidance, routines, and tools that support day-to-day practice. Together, the two books balance reflection and application, honoring both the heart of teaching and the structures that sustain it over time. Each stands on its own, while also deepening the meaning and usefulness of the other when read side by side.

Cathy, how about a paragraph or two here about how each book is an excellent companion to the other? After a lot of thought and experiment, I found that giving a separate space for the purchase of the bundle was the least confusing way to integrate this into the webpage. The word 'bundle' comes from an email you wrote on Dec 5th with the pricing info. I really like it, so have used it in this context. If you prefer different wording, let me know!

Wow—this book is an absolute stunner. From the moment it landed in my hands, I was smitten. The photos? Gorgeous. The poetry? Soul-stirring. It’s the kind of book you read once, sigh deeply, and then read again just to soak up more of its magic. There’s this quiet, powerful connection between the images and the words that feels like a gentle nudge to slow down, breathe, and feel.

Stunning book. Wonderful pictures and descriptions. Enjoying it tremendously.
Oh my. I received the book today. I love it, it’s beautiful! My first thought after reading and looking at the photos was, I wish I could teach a creative writing class and use this as prompts. What a great teaching tool!
Wanted to let you know that your book arrived. It is absolutely beautiful!
I just read your book for the second time. There is a quiet connection between your photos and the poems that is palpable and touches me at soul level. Your questions encourage the reader to feel that quiet connection in themselves and express it. Opening the door to a new way of seeing! A truly beautiful book!
Received your book yesterday. The pictures are beautiful and reading the poetry is so inspiring and relaxing.
